Godspeed You! Black Emperor - March 9, 2023 - MTelus - Montreal, QC

Attending a Godspeed You! Black Emperor concert is an immersive and transcendental experience that defies conventional musical boundaries. The sheer magnitude of their performance is awe-inspiring, taking the audience on an epic sonic journey through a tapestry of emotions.

From the moment the first notes of Hope Drone reverberated through the venue, the audience were all captivated by the band's ability to beautiful harness a cacophony of sound and transpose it into a beautifully chaotic soundscape. The band effortlessly blended intricate guitar melodies, haunting strings, and thunderous percussion to create a symphony of sound that resonates deep within your soul. The venue shook.

Of course the absence of traditional song structures allows the music of GSY!BE to breathe, creating space for contemplation and introspection. The gradual build-ups and cascading crescendos create a cathartic release, filling the room with a palpable energy that is both hypnotic and profound.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's performance is a visual feast as well, with striking projections live spooled and manipulated by film artist Karl Lemieux that add another layer of intensity to the musical experience. The atmosphere is immersive, dense and otherworldly. It is hopeful and bleak all at once.

As the band launched into their debut album's song The Sad Mafioso, much to the audiences delight, there was a feeling of transformation and possibly enlightenment, with a renewed appreciation for the indescribable.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's live show is a testament to their artistic vision and a testament to the transformative power of the sound only they can conjure.

...but if you've seen them before you know all this stuff already and that's ok because each time is just as good.
